Bowled over

... So I came home from work yesterday afternoon and, as usual, flipped on ESPN while I changed clothes to go work out. And there were my guys Wilbon and Kornheiser talking on PTI about the Florida-Ohio State matchup and suggesting that the Gators speed and defense could very well be too much for the vaunted Ohio State team ...

Hmm, interesting, I thought. I liked what they were saying and it was enough for me to want to root for the Gators ... And that was after thinking ... the National Championship game is tonight!? It's about time. It's been so long since all the other bowl games were played I was beginning to think I missed it. Man, this whole BCS things sucks. Are the boneheads in charge of college football ever going to come to their senses and get a real playoff system ... ??

Seriously. Wilbon's argument on PTI could not have been better. The layoff between Ohio State's last regular season game and the championship game, he noted, would be like baseball's regular season ending the first week of October and the playoffs starting the last week in November. That's insane!

... So Kates and I watched our regular lineup of Monday night TV (... which actually was pretty disappointing last night ... ) and I flipped over to the Florida-Ohio State game in time to catch the end of the first half and see all of the second half ...

...By golly! Florida was doing it. They're speedy defense and a steady offense had them up 34-14 at the half ... and they sailed the rest of the way. Sure, it wasn't as exciting as last year's amazing Texas-USC finish, but last night's game was memorable in its own right ...

The Blowout Nobody Expected: It's not often the No. 1 team in the country, undefeated and decorated, gets punked the way Ohio State did. The only thing that got dotted here Monday night was the Buckeyes. The Florida Gators, in their wildest dreams, couldn't have fantasized about dominating the BCS title game ... (more)
